Mount Meru, standing tall at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), is the second-highest peak in Tanzania and forms part of the Arusha National Park. Often referred to as the "little brother" to Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers a challenging yet rewarding trek, showcasing diverse ecosystems, breathtaking landscapes, and stunning views of its big sister in the distance.
Climbing Mount Meru is an excellent option for those seeking a less crowded but equally captivating trekking experience in Tanzania. Some people prefer Meru as a startup before attempting Kilimanjaro for acclimatization.
The ascent of Mount Meru takes trekkers through lush rainforests, open grasslands, heather moorlands, and alpine desert zones. Climbing Mount Meru involves some technical sections,
including a challenging scramble up the exposed cliffs of the "Cobra Wall." This adds an element of excitement and adventure to the trek. Accommodation on Mount Meru is on public huts. The climb can be done in 4 and 3 days.
After Breakfast, Transfer to Momella Gate .Begin the trek through the lush rainforest. Reach Miriakamba Hut 2500m (8202ft) for an overnight stay.
Continue the trek through the heather moorland. Reach Saddle Hut 3500m (12482ft) for acclimatization. Optional afternoon trek to Little Meru for stunning views. Prepare for summit push at Midnight
Begin the summit push in the early hours. Reach the summit (4,566 meters) for breathtaking sunrise views. Descend to Saddle Hut for a brief rest. Continue the descent to Miriakamba Hut for the overnight stay.
Descend through the rainforest to Momella Gate. Complete the trek and transfer back to Arusha. Celebrate your Mount Meru climb with a well-deserved rest.
