The Serengeti Safari is one of the most sought-after African safari experiences. Many travelers inquire about the Serengeti, and for good reason. To maximize your time there, consider the following tips:
The Great Wildebeest Migration
The Great Wildebeest Migration is the Serengeti’s top highlight. This annual event involves over 2 million animals migrating between Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve. It’s the world’s largest herd movement, including wildebeest, zebras, topi, and other gazelles. The migration’s two main events are calving and river crossings.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit depends on your priorities:
- Great Migration (June to October): Witness the spectacular river crossings.
- Birdwatching (November to April): Enjoy abundant bird species, including migrants.
- Budget-Friendly (March to May): Experience fewer crowds but potentially harsher conditions.
The dry season (June to October) generally offers the best game viewing and comfortable conditions, but it’s also the peak season, leading to higher prices.
Number of Days
Serengeti National Park covers a vast area, so a minimum of 4 days (3 nights) is recommended to fully explore it. However, even 3 days (2 nights) can provide a glimpse of its wonders.
Accommodation Options
Choose from tents, lodges, or tented camps based on your comfort level, budget, and desired exclusivity.
Getting to the Serengeti
You can reach the Serengeti by plane or road. A direct drive from Moshi takes about 8 hours. We often recommend a more leisurely journey, spending the first night in Karatu and driving to Serengeti the next day. Alternatively, you can fly from Arusha to one of the Serengeti’s airstrips. Flights are also available from other parks like Masai Mara.
Remember: Planning is key to a successful Serengeti safari. Consider your interests, budget, and desired level of comfort when making decisions.
