Arusha National Park

Scenic Landscapes & Walking Safaris

Overview

Arusha National Park is a compact but ecologically diverse protected area in northeastern Tanzania, about 25 km east of the city of Arusha and near Mount Kilimanjaro. Established in 1960, it safeguards Mount Meru—Tanzania’s second-highest peak—and several striking volcanic and lake landscapes. Its accessibility and variety make it a key gateway to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit.

Geography and landscape

Arusha National Park comprises three distinct zones: the forested Ngurdoto Crater, a marshy caldera often called the “Little Ngorongoro”; the alkaline Momella Lakes, whose varying mineral content produces vivid water colors and attracts flamingos; and the towering volcanic cone of Mount Meru. Elevation ranges from about 1,400 m to nearly 4,600 m, creating habitats from savannah to alpine moorland.

Wildlife and birdlife

Although it lacks resident lions or elephants, the park hosts Tanzania’s largest giraffe population along with buffaloes, warthogs, bushbucks, waterbucks, and blue and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Birdwatchers can spot more than 400 species, including Hartlaub’s turaco, crowned eagle, and large flocks of flamingos at the Momella Lakes. Leopards and hyenas are occasionally seen in forested areas.

Visitors can explore by vehicle, on foot, or by canoe. Guided walking safaris trace crater rims and forest paths, while canoeing on Small Momella Lake offers a close look at waterbirds and hippos. The 3- to 4-day Mount Meru climb traverses multiple ecological zones and provides sunrise views of Kilimanjaro. Other highlights include the 28-m Tululusia Waterfall and the naturally formed Fig Tree Arch.

Climate and best time to visit

The park’s mountain climate is temperate year-round, with daytime temperatures around 20–25 °C. The dry seasons (June–October and December–February) offer the clearest views and easiest hiking, while the greener months (November and March–May) enhance birdwatching.

Access and accommodation

Arusha National Park lies about 45 minutes by road from Arusha city and roughly 60 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Lodging ranges from luxury stays such as Hatari Lodge and Momella Wildlife Lodge to TANAPA campsites and nearby guesthouses, allowing easy inclusion in itineraries linking Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
