The park stretches from the Rift Valley escarpment to the shores of Lake Manyara, which can cover up to two-thirds of its area during the rainy season. Its habitats include groundwater forests, acacia woodlands, and open grasslands. The lake itself is alkaline and shallow, attracting diverse birdlife and seasonal wildlife migrations.

Wildlife

Lake Manyara National Park hosts a wide range of species, including elephants, giraffes, hippos, and blue monkeys. It is particularly noted for its population of tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior among the species. Birdwatching is exceptional, with over 400 recorded species—most notably flamingos, pelicans, and storks.

Tourism and Accessibility

The park is a popular stop on Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, often combined with visits to Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. It lies about 126 kilometers (78 miles) west of Arusha and is accessible by road or air via a small airstrip. Game drives, canoeing (seasonal), and cultural tours with nearby communities are common activities.

Conservation and Challenges

As part of the Lake Manyara Biosphere Reserve, the park supports both conservation and sustainable development in adjacent areas. Challenges include habitat encroachment and fluctuations in the lake’s water levels due to climate variability and upstream water use, affecting wildlife patterns and tourism appeal.
