Ruaha National Park

Untouched Wilderness

Overview

Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s largest protected area and one of East Africa’s most biodiverse wildlife reserves. Known for its rugged landscapes and exceptional predator populations, the park offers an unspoiled safari experience away from the more crowded destinations on the northern circuit.

Key facts
  • Location: Central Tanzania, near Iringa

  • Established: 1964

  • Area: ~20,226 km²

  • Main river: Great Ruaha River

  • Best season: June–October (dry season)

Landscape and ecology

The park spans a dramatic mix of semi-arid savanna, acacia woodland, and rugged escarpments. The Great Ruaha River defines much of its ecosystem, providing a crucial water source for wildlife. Vast plains and baobab-dotted hills create striking scenery that supports both East and Southern African flora and fauna.

Wildlife

Ruaha hosts one of Africa’s largest elephant populations and is a stronghold for predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas. The park is notable for its high diversity of antelope species, including the rare sable and roan antelopes, and over 570 bird species that attract ornithologists year-round.

Conservation and tourism

Part of the Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi ecosystem, Ruaha plays a central role in Tanzania’s conservation strategy. Managed by Tanzania National Parks Authority, it faces challenges from climate variability and human–wildlife conflict. Tourism remains relatively low-impact, focused on small lodges and tented camps that promote sustainable safaris and community engagement.

Access and experience

Travelers reach Ruaha via road from Iringa or by charter flights from Dar es Salaam, Selous Game Reserve, or Serengeti National Park. Activities include guided game drives, birdwatching, and walking safaris along the riverine landscapes. The park’s remote setting offers visitors an authentic, less-commercialized safari experience amid classic East African wilderness.
