Historically, Zanzibar was a key node in the Indian Ocean trade network, exporting spices, slaves, and ivory. It came under Portuguese, Omani, and later British control before uniting with Tanganyika in 1964 to form Tanzania. Stone Town, the historic quarter of Zanzibar City, reflects this multicultural heritage with Arab, Persian, Indian, and European architectural influences.

Economy and Tourism

Tourism and spice cultivation (especially cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon) are the economic mainstays. Visitors are drawn by historic architecture, wildlife such as red colobus monkeys in Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, and world-renowned beaches like Nungwi and Kendwa.

Governance and Identity

Zanzibar maintains its own president, legislature, and judicial system within the United Republic of Tanzania. Its semi-autonomous status reflects a distinct cultural and historical identity, blending Swahili traditions with influences from across the Indian Ocean world.
